The Minnesota Twins made it official on Tuesday morning: Jason Marquis was designated for release or assignment and purchased the contract of 27-year-old right-hander Cole DeVries.

DeVries -- a 2003 Eden Prairie graduate who pitched collegiately at the University of Minnesota -- is expected to start Thursday against the White Sox. He will be the ninth pitcher to start a game for the Twins this season.

In eight starts for Triple-A Rochester this season DeVries owns a 4.24 ERA with 37 strikeouts, seven walks and six home runs allowed in 46 2/3 innings.
