To make room on the 25-man roster, the Twins optioned INF Matt Tolbert back to Rochester.
Manship made one start for the Twins on May 1 in Cleveland, allowing two earned runs on five hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out six. Manship has a 3.93 ERA at Rochester this season, with 28 strikeouts and 12 walks in 36 2/3 innings.
Tolbert appeared in three games for the Twins since his call-up last week. He had one hit in four at bats.
On the surface, this seems like an odd move. The Twins now have 13 pitchers on the roster and only one backup infielder, and SS J.J. Hardy isn't eligible to return from the disabled list until later this week.
That said, RHP Jesse Crain gave up another home run this afternoon, raising his ERA to 7.31, and you have to wonder how long the leash is.
Could Hardy take Crain's roster spot this week?
