Manager Ron Gardenhire hinted strongly at the move on Sunday morning, and now the Minnesota Twins have made it official.

Right-hander Jim Hoey has been called up from Class-AAA Rochester. He will take the place of right-hander Jeff Manship, who has been sent back down.

Hoey, 28, impressed the Twins field staff in spring training with his mid-90's fastball, but the team wanted him to work on honing his off-speed stuff -- namely his split-fingered fastball, which acts as a strikeout pitch.

Hoey had allowed two earned runs in 6 2/3 innings for Rochester this season, striking out eight and walking one.

Control has been Hoey's biggest issue to this point in his career, but the Twins like his ability to blow hitters away, as evidenced by the 10.3 strikeouts per nine the right-hander has racked up in an eight-year minor league career.

It's highly likely he will be used in late-inning situations right out of the gate.
