According to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Minnesota Twins have placed designated hitter Jim Thome and outfielder Jason Kubel on waivers.

These moves come as little surprise, because a large majority of veteran players are placed on waivers after August 1st.

If a player passes through all 29 teams without being claimed, the Twins would have until August 31 to complete a trade with any team in the major leagues. If a team claims either Thome or Kubel, the Twins could choose one of three options: 1.) work out a trade with the team that claimed the player, 2.) give the player, and his contract, away with no compensation, or 3.) pull the player off waivers and keep him.

Rosenthal adds that the Philadelphia Phillies are interested in Thome, whose base salary this season is $3 million.

Kubel's salary is $5.25 million.

Both players are set to become free agents after the season.
