MINNEAPOLIS -- The Twins have optioned reliever Alex Burnett to Class-AAA Rochester and recalled left-hander Ron Mahay.

The move came minutes after Burnett threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings in a 6-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox.

"We're going to bring up Mahay, another left-handed pitcher, which we felt like we need right now," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He's been throwing however many times down there (at Class-A Fort Myers), ready to go. ... And Burnett needs to pitch. He's a young kid."

The Twins picked up Mahay, 38, last year after Kansas City designated him for assignment. He re-signed with the Twins on a minor-league deal March 24.

In four appearances with Fort Myers, Mahay was 0-1 with a 1.93 earned-run average.
