Mike Pelfrey's absence from the Twins' rotation will be a lengthy one.
The team announced on Tuesday night that the righthanded pitcher underwent elbow ulnar nerve decompression surgery. The surgery was performed Tuesday by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla.
Pelfrey originally went on a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Rochester to recover from a groin injury, but was returned from his assignment after experiencing numbness and tingling in his right fingers.
At that point it was discovered he had ulnar nerve irritation. Pelfrey has been on the disabled list since May 2. He was 0-3 with a 7.99 earned-run average in five starts this season.
