The Minnesota Twins announced Thursday that they have traded catcher Jose Morales to the Colorado Rockies for left-handed reliever Paul Bargas.
Bargas, 22, posted a 3.59 ERA with 64 strikeouts and 19 walks in 67 2/3 innings for Single-A Asheville last season.
Morales, 27, fell behind Drew Butera on the backup catcher depth chart last season. He hit .194/.295/.250 in 44 plate appearances with the Twins, and .264/.350/.380 in 295 plate appearances at Triple-A Rochester.
Overall, despite the down season -- which was caused, in part, because of early-season wrist troubles -- Morales is a much better hitter than Butera. But the Twins trust Butera's defense and ability to throw out runners much more than Morales'.
