EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- The Vikings will not trade Christian Ponder.
That's what Vikings GM Rick Spielman said Tuesday at Winter Park, anyway.
It's likely that NFL personnel people have employed smokescreens for quite some time, but for what it's worth, Spielman was quick to dismiss the notion Tuesday that the Vikings might trade the quarterback he drafted far too high in 2011.
Has Spielman had conversations about trades involving Ponder?
"No, I'm not going to comment on who or what but I can tell you that no, and Ponder, we wouldn't trade Ponder," Spielman said.
How about during the draft?
Asked later why he wouldn't consider the possibility, Spielman said it would leave a hole on the roster.
"That would leave us with one quarterback, I will not do that. We're going to need two quarterbacks -- three."
The Vikings recently declined to pick up the fifth-year option on Ponder's rookie contract.
"I'll keep it to purely business decisions and we just wanted to make sure we kept all our options going forward, especially financially going into next year."
