The Minnesota Vikings made room for defensive tackle Kevin Williams on the roster with a somewhat surprising move on Tuesday, waiving end Adrian Awasom.

Awasom, 27, was a standout in the preseason and played 15 snaps in the Sept. 11 opener at San Diego. But he missed two days of practice last week with a knee problem and was inactive for Sunday's loss to Tampa Bay.

Williams' two-game suspension for a violation of the NFL's policy on banned substances ended on Monday. The Vikings had until Wednesday to move Williams to the 53-man roster.

His return created a glut on the defensive line. The Vikings chose to waive Awasom over rookie end D'Aundre Reed, the seventh-round pick who has been inactive for the team's first two games.
