Payne (6-2, 205) played in two games for the Seattle Seahawks in 2008, recording three catches for 39 yards, and also has spent time with Kansas City and Detroit since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2007. He worked out for the team at the rookie minicamp earlier this month.
The Vikings now have added five former Gophers this offseason: Payne, kickoff specialist Rhys Lloyd, linebacker Nate Triplett, defensive back Marcus Sherels and end Cedric McKinley. Like Sherels and McKinley, who were signed as rookie free agents, Payne is a long shot to make the roster.
The team also released undrafted rookie receiver Kelton Tindal, who had struggled in his transition from Division II Newberry.
