EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Minnesota Vikings coach Leslie Frazier made a request to general manager Rick Spielman and the team's scouting staff when they were discussing this weekend's rookie minicamp.

"I said, 'Get us some numbers,'" Frazier recalled on Friday. "We want competition at this camp."

Frazier got his wish. Camp opened on Friday morning with 71 players in uniform for the first of five practices scheduled through Sunday.

The list included 10 draft picks, 15 undrafted rookie signings, seven pre-draft signings and a remarkable 39 players who are participating on a tryout basis.

"The more guys you have competing, the better chance you have of finding someone that's undrafted that may be able to help your team," Frazier said. "So, that was a goal -- to get some numbers and not just have 20, 25 guys. It should be good for us.

"We've got plenty of time to watch tape and evaluate the guys along with what we do on the football field. But if you are able to find one guy that may have been undrafted that can help your football team, it's worth it."

The most notable player to make the team out of rookie camp in recent years was cornerback/return man Marcus Sherels, who impressed during the 2010 edition. There was no rookie camp last year because of the NFL lockout.

All the extra bodies also allow coaches to reduce the number of snaps on players who may have had minimal competitive football work since their college seasons ended.

"That's a part of having those numbers, because now, you don't wear them out," Frazier said. "You can still go at a good tempo. You don't have to say, 'OK, we've got to slow this down or we've got to cut this period out. So, it works twofold."

About a dozen veteran players, including quarterback Christian Ponder, attended Friday's morning practice to watch the new additions.
