EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- The Minnesota Vikings placed tight end Allen Reisner on waivers on Thursday to clear room for wide receiver Jerome Simpson on the 53-man roster.
Simpson had a roster exemption for the opening three weeks of the season because he was suspended by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
The Vikings were granted an extension until 3 p.m. Thursday to make a roster move to get back down to the 53-man limit.
Reisner was on the field at the start of practice but had to be taken off before the session ended because the Vikings were still going when 3 o'clock hit.
Reisner was signed by the Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2011 after playing college football at Iowa. He played in six games as a rookie, catching one pass for 5 yards, and also spent time on the team's practice squad.
Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said he's not sure if the Vikings will attempt to sign Reisner to their practice squad if he clears waivers. "We talked about a bunch of different things with that move so we'll see," Frazier said.
Frazier said, "there was a lot of discussion about" who would be taken off the roster to make room for Simpson.
