EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Minnesota Vikings quarterback Josh Freeman spoke with defensive end George Johnson before choosing the Vikings.

On his first day, one of Freeman's friends was released from the team, the Vikings announced on Wednesday. Johnson was waived, allowing the team to pick up former New York Giants defensive end Justin Trattou off waivers.

Johnson, 25, made the 53-man roster as the fourth defensive end after serving last season on the practice squad. The Vikings didn't seem to value him too highly, as he was replaced by the recently cut Trattou.

One could speculate the Vikings' appeal in Trattou was amplified because the Vikings meet the Giants on Monday Night Football on Oct. 21.

Trattou, 25, has appeared in 11 career games since being signed as an undrafted free agent by the Giants in 2011. He has four combined tackles in those appearances.
