The Minnesota Vikings have waived quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson on Tuesday in order to sign quarterback Josh Freeman to the 53-man roster.

Bethel-Thompson, 25, beat out former Vikings quarterback Sage Rosenfels for the third spot before the 2012 season. He retained that role this season until the Vikings added Freeman on Sunday night. Bethel-Thompson is practice squad eligible if he clears waivers.

Either quarterback Christian Ponder, Matt Cassel or Freeman will be inactive for Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers. Ponder is dealing with a rib injury he suffered in a Sept. 22 loss to the Cleveland Browns, while Freeman has already been ruled out by coach Leslie Frazier in order to integrate him into the offense.
