The Vikings need to settle the quarterback spot. Not immediately, eventually. Patchwork would suffice for 2014.

It stands out, though, that at the most important position in the NFL , the Vikings have employed patchwork for a decade. I advocated Wednesday in a video that the Vikings have a one-year plan in place that allows a drafted player to slowly acclimate.

Emulate the Seattle Seahawks.

Have in place a serviceable plan (Matt Flynn) and draft a player (Russell Wilson) that can slowly be worked into a full-time role. Now, obviously Wilson expedited that timeline, but he's the exception. I think players like Geno Smith, for example, bear more responsibility too early in their careers in today's NFL. I speculate that a more patient model yields a higher rate of success for QB prospects.

To state the obvious, Christian Ponder doesn't count as a serviceable plan for 2014. He's a worthy third-stringer.

But should the Vikings sign a veteran quarterback and plan to start him this season? I think assuredly they should and will.

With that in mind -- and yesterday's note from CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora that Matt Cassel might land with the Texans -- here is a list of free agent quarterbacks available March 11. I ordered them by the number of snaps in 2013.

Do any of them interest you?

Additional: If indeed the Houston Texans looks to add another quarterback, it's possible or even likely they'd cut Matt Schaub. Add Schaub to this list if you'd like.

Take your pick from this list. Or, poke holes in my one-year stopgap theory. What's your plan to fix the Vikings' quarterback situation?
