The Minnesota Wild didn't enter Sunday's NHL draft with a first-round pick but that didn't mean general manager Chuck Fletcher was taking it easy.

After dealing defenseman Justin Falk to the New York Rangers in the morning, Fletcher sent winger Cal Clutterbuck to the New York Islanders in exchange for right winger Nino Neiderreiter. The Islanders also received one of the Wild's two third-round picks in Sunday's draft. That was the 70th selection overall.

Neiderreiter, the fifth-overall selection in the 2010 draft by the Islanders, had one goal and no assists in 55 games with New York in 2011-12. He finished with a plus-minus rating of minus-29.

Neiderreiter, 20, spent all of last season with Bridgeport in the American Hockey League and had 28 goals and 50 points in 74 games. Niederreiter, who is 6-foot-2, 208 pounds, also led Switzerland with five goals and added three assists in the 2013 world championships. He helped the Swiss earn a silver medal, its first medal at the tournament in 60 years.

The native of Chur, Switzerland, was a star with Davos and played junior hockey for Portland of the WHL. Neiderreiter had 36 goals and 24 assists in 65 games in 2009-2010 with Portland and 41 goals and 29 assists in 55 games the following season.

In 64 NHL games over two seasons, Neiderreiter has two goals and one assist and is a minus-30. He also had 20 penalty minutes.

"I'll try to bring my size, my physical play as a power forward, and would like to bring the game I played in junior. I'm capable of scoring goals," Niederreiter told the Star Tribune.

The 25-year-old Clutterbuck, who is a restricted free agent, was a teammate of Islanders star center John Tavares in the Ontario Hockey League.

Clutterbuck, a third-round pick of the Wild in 2006, became a favorite among many fans because of his aggressive style of play. He had 62 goals and 48 assists in 346 career games in five-plus seasons with the Wild.

Clutterbuck had four goals and six assists in 42 games during the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season and also added 27 penalty minutes. He led the Wild with 155 hits.

The Wild began Sunday by acquiring a sixth-round selection in the 2014 draft and the rights to restricted free agent Benn Ferriero from the New York Rangers in exchange for Falk.
