Kyle Rau's first period goal all Gophers need in shutout of Spartans

One goal was all the Gophers hockey team needed.

Kyle Rau's goal, scored just under seven minutes into the first period on Saturday, held up as the game-winner on Saturday as the top-ranked Gophers shut out Michigan State 1-0 at Mariucci Arena.

After losing to the Spartans (8-13-4, 2-5-3-3 in the Big Ten) in a shootout on Friday, goalie Adam Wilcox's 19 saves helped to salvage the weekend for the Gophers (19-2-5, 8-0-2-0 Big Ten).

Minnesota pounded Michigan State goalie Jake Hildebrand with 37 shots, but only Rau was able to break through.

The Gophers travel to Madison next weekend to take on No. 9-ranked Wisconsin.
