MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman was absent from practice on Tuesday, one day after missing the Wolves' 107-89 loss to the Houston Rockets due to personal reasons.

Assistant coach Terry Porter, who is serving as acting head coach, said after practice he still expects Adelman to be back with the Wolves Wednesday when they conclude the first half of the season against the Denver Nuggets.

This is the second practice Adelman has missed this season, having been absent for one day in December for the birth of his grandchild. Adelman missed 11 games last season to be with his wife, Mary Kay, who was dealing with an ongoing battle with a seizure disorder.

There have been no specifics given for Adelman's absence.

In the meantime, the Wolves have moved forward as usual, with Porter in charge of practices and game-day decisions.

"He's coming back soon, but like everything in this life, family is first," guard Ricky Rubio said of Adelman.

In need of a break

The All-Star break is coming at a desperately needed time for the Wolves, who have lost four straight en route to dropping four games below .500 for the first time this season. Injuries have become issue as well, with Nikola Pekovic (ankle) and Kevin Martin (thumb) both sidelined until some point after the break.

Sitting seven games behind Phoenix, Golden State and Dallas for the final playoff spots in the Western Conference, the Wolves are rapidly running out of time to salvage their season.

"We're banged up, but after All-Star break, we should be back at full strength, just about," forward Corey Brewer said. "It's the only time to pick it up, because if we don't get a winning streak together, then we're going home."
