Ep. 128: Inside 2016 draft’s receiver group with college coaches, analyst Dane Brugler

On this episode of the Purple Podcast, Andrew Krammer interviews three college coaches and one draft analyst on the top wide receiver prospects in next week’s NFL Draft.

(2:00) First, Krammer asks Ohio State receivers coach Zach Smith about Michael Thomas and quarterback-turned-receiver Braxton Miller. What did Thomas gain from a redshirt sophomore season? And how much of a gamble will teams be taking on Miller as a receiver?

(13:10) Toledo receivers coach Derek Sage joins to discuss top prospect Josh Doctson, who the Vikings have monitored throughout the spring. Sage recruited Doctson out of his Texas high school, talking him out of a basketball career. What makes Doctson such a natural talent? And how has he handled the draft process?

(23:20) Up next is Ole Miss receivers coach Grant Heard, who sheds light on the draft’s top receiver Laquon Treadwell. At age 20, is Treadwell ready for the NFL? And do these draft workouts properly showcase his game?

(31:25) Finally, CBS Sports draft analyst Dane Brugler puts the entire class into perspective and gives his opinion on what direction the Vikings should take with the 23rd-overall pick. Also, Brugler gives his insight on Notre Dame’s Will Fuller and the best of the rest, including Oklahoma’s Sterling Shepard and South Carolina’s Pharoh Cooper.

Officials from TCU and Baylor declined requests for coaches on Doctson and Corey Coleman.
