New Vikings RB Latavius Murray has ‘too much respect’ to ask for his old No. 28

Latavius Murray wore No. 28 as a kid because of Fred Taylor. Then, when Taylor retired and Adrian Peterson was busy doing his thing as one of the best running backs of all-time, Murray stuck with 28 as a nod to Peterson.

Now, Murray joins the Vikings, which likely means Peterson won’t be back. And if you were wondering whether Murray might try to keep his number — the purple and gold No. 28 that Peterson wore all those years — you can forget about that.

In a classy Instagram post Thursday, Murray wrote that he has “too much respect” for what Peterson has accomplished to even ask for the number. (He might not have gotten it anyway, but in any case, it’s a nice gesture.)

“There wasn’t a thought in my mind to try and wear or ask for the #28,” Murray wrote. “I have too much respect for AP and so much respect for what he’s done and what he means to this organization.”

It’s not hard to imagine the Vikings retiring Peterson’s No. 28, since “Adrian” fits right alongside other great Vikings mononyms like Fran (10) and Mick (53). The other jerseys that have been retired are Jim Marshall (70), Korey Stringer (77), Cris Carter (80) and Alan Page (88). And who knows, maybe one day Randy Moss’ 84 will be reserved, too.

Here’s the rest of Murray’s post:

Many people don’t know, but I wore the #28 as a kid because of Fred Taylor who played for the Jaguars at the time. When AP came onto the scene and Fred retired, he was my reason for keeping #28. I want to say to Vikings fans: I’m not here to replace #28, he’s irreplaceable. I’m not here to be #28, there’s no one like him. I ask that you accept me for the player I am and know that I’m here to give you all I got and to win #skol

Very classy gesture by the new RB… not a big deal, but at least the dude has some sort of awareness of how odd it would be to see a taller more slender #28 bouncing around this season.

    Liking the dude already! SKOL!

Sure looks like the Vikings got a good person in Murray and a complete RB too boot ~ Been a long time sense the Vikings has such a RB ~ I believe I said this elsewhere ~ And if I have please forgive me ~ I have to believe Bradford is sleeping better at night knowing he will have someone capable of picking up a blitzing LB or DB ~
It will be fun to watch how Shurmur will use him and McKinnon ~ And I have to wonder if the Vikings will not now wait till after the 2nd round to try and find another RB to add to the roster ~ I still believe that OG and maybe Center will be at the top of the Vikings to do list ~ Be it in FA or the top of their draft ~ They have to be able to hope holes for the RB’s while protecting Bradford ~
