Vikings sign former Bears DT Sutton

The Minnesota Vikings announced Wednesday they have added another defensive tackle to the mix, signing former Chicago Bear Will Sutton.

Sutton, who was a 2014 third-round pick, has made 18 starts for Chicago in his three seasons.

The 6-foot-1, 290-pound defensive tackle only played 174 snaps last season but received solid marks from Pro Football Focus. If he had qualified among ranked players in total snaps, Sutton would have been 43rd overall.

Sutton will compete with Datone Jones, Jaleel Johnson and Tom Johnson for playing time at the three-technique spot.

Adding another DT may speak to the health of Sharrif Floyd, who reportedly has nerve damage in his knee stemming from meniscus surgery last season.

The Vikings released Toby Johnson to make room for Sutton.

Yeah… picking up another DT definitely speaks to happenings with Shariff Floyd… shame, I was really hoping the dude would come back eventually, but it looks like Minnesota is preparing to cut their losses.

    • Jeeves

Shoot, I was pulling for Toby. He showed some promise last preseason.

      • Gordon Guffey

I believe Toby still has a chance ~ It may be another year on the PS before he gets his shot though ~ Looks like the Vikings are loading up with as much talent as possible ((( cap wise ))) in hopes of playing at home in the Super Bowl ~ If only it works out that way ~ Smile Face 🙂

I like this signing no matter what happens with Floyd.

Can’t get too excited about a FA who was still available in the middle of May, and reports about him coming out of college highlighted concerns about his work ethic and conditioning, but they also say he’s very athletic and could be a productive pass rusher, so if the Vikings coaches can work their magic…

    • Revenant

Zimmer likes to steadily rotate his defensive players so this is low risk/high reward.

    • B. A. Barakas

From what I understand from my freinds who are Bears fans is Sutton is a good player who was drafted by the previous regime in Chicago as a 4-3 DT and when the new staff took over and switched to the 3-4 he was pretty much forced to play out of position…I like signings like these…Doesn’t take much to see what he can do and maybe he pans out…

  • Gordon Guffey

Floyd being the most likely to start on IR and word is Teddy could spend the first 8 games or more on the PUP list instead of IR this could be a big help to teams with who lose more than one key player to injury ~ I like it ~
