Report: Vikings deny QBs coach Stefanski chance to interview with Giants

The Minnesota Vikings will not be allowing their quarterbacks coach to join former offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur with the New York Giants.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Kevin Stefanski has been denied permission to interview for the Giants’ open offensive coordinator position.

Stefanski served as the quarterbacks coach in Minnesota this year. He has been with the Vikings’ organization since 2006 working as an assistant to the head coach, assistant quarterbacks coach, tight ends coach and running back’s coach.

Multiple reports stated that Stefanski was a favorite to land the Giants’ OC gig if he were allowed to interview.

The Vikings passed over Stefanski to hired Eagles QBs coach John DiFilippo to replace Shurmur.

Feel bad for Stefanski if he wanted to take the promotion, but glad that we are keeping him. I’m thinking the Vikes are looking at this as DeFilippo will likely be pursued for a HC gig in the next year or two, and they can move Stefanski into the OC position.

I’m also gonna assume that Stefanski will get some kind of “promotion” and a pay raise for staying.

It could end up working out best for everyone involved if he stays. Stefanski only has one season as the top QB coach (he was assistant QB coach from ’09-’12), so he should benefit from another year of experience under a well-respected OC. Meanwhile, DeFilippo has already been interviewed for an HC job, so if things work out the way Vikings’ fans hope, he could be gone as early as next season. If so, then Stefanski is first in line to replace him.

            Ok. “Concubine in servitude” 😉

  • Andre Esters

Errr… things could get awkward if Stefanski is finding out about this denial the same way we are…

    • Drediock

      That it would.
But common procedure is that when a team is refused an interview with a coach. Said coach is in line for a massive pay raise.

I think the assistant coaches need a union.
