Vikings hire Eagles QB coach John DeFilippo as offensive coordinator

The Minnesota Vikings apparently had good reason to wait until the Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl to interview quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo. On Thursday night, the Vikings hired DeFilippo as their new offensive coordinator.

DeFilippo replaced Pat Shurmur, who was hired earlier this offseason by the New York Giants. The former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator helped the Eagles to a championship despite losing their starting quarterback Carson Wentz.

With the hiring of DeFilippo, it’s possible Shurmur could hire Vikings QB coach Kevin Stefanski as his offensive coordinator.

  • Bob T.

For me, this is good news. welcome aboard John.

  • Cman

I’m torn between this and wanting Stefanski to be promoted. I wonder if this means we will try and trade for Foles? He is relatively cheap, and we can try to resign Bridgewater or Bradford to compete with Foles.

    • Jordan Musser

That’s a very good idea however I think Philly will want a 1st rd pick and I know it’s is late but I still say we need to keep it. Cman you already know who I like and now I wonder if this opens door for Cousins or does Defillipo see something in Sloter to convince Vikings to franchise Case knowing Sloter will be ready the following season?

      • Cman

I don’t think any team would give up a 1st for Foles. Our 2nd rd pick is more like a 3rd rd pick with how late we pick.

While it’s possible that Cousins will be an option, I’m thinking DeFilippo will want a QB who he knows and has worked with before to kinda ease into his first season calling plays. That’s why I think they will entertain trading for Foles, and resigning Bradford to compete, as he has worked with both before.

        • Ron Green

          Nope…Go after Cousins

          • Cman

It’s anyones guess at this point.

          • Wilbur One

Screw Cousins! Save that money, and sign Keenum. I think he’ll do well with DeFilippo. Start pushing Sloter harder, and find another back-up QB in FA.

    • Steve Jensen

The Vikes aren’t going to give up any more draft picks for QB’s when they can sign one of their own FA’s or Cousins without giving up anything., Philly will want a lot for Foles via trade because he’ll have to start the first quarter of the season while Wentz recovers from ACL/LCL. Be curious to see which QB they go after though. Guessing they’ll sign Keenum under the transition tag and keep Teddy under the tolling option and still be able to improve the team and keep their own players.

      • Cman

It’s been said that Wentz will likely be able to start week 1. If the Vikes think they can get a better option via trade than to resign one of our free agents, I think they wouldn’t hesitate to use a draft pick.

        • Steve Jensen

If they want to rush him the way Washington did RG3 he may be able to play. But why would they do that? They don’t need to. He tore both his ACL and LCL in December. It would be shocking to see him on the field week 1 when they simply don’t need to rush him….. and they won’t.

          • Cman

That’s very possible. I’m just curious to see if Foles goes to the team and says he wants a trade because his stock won’t ever be higher than it is right now, and he wants to start.

      • Duane

I think they would be wise to draft a q.b. this year . Still have teddy,Sloter , & can franchise Case. Buys time for another year. See what they really have.

        • Cman

They don’t still have Teddy. More than likely he is a free agent. If they tag Keenum, Teddy will likely walk after being passed over for the starting job. The Vikes won’t tag Keenum to have a competition.

      • Llaarryy

I hope you’re right about not trading away any more no. 1 picks on Philly’s backup QBs. I’m not as optimistic that Rick is that smart.

Also, let’s remember that they were waiting for the new OC to help pick the QB. I’m guessing that Flip likes big guys who can sling it. That might mean wanting to go after Foles more than Case or Teddy. Especially since he might believe all the hype that Foles is now a proven SB winning QB.

I really like Flip’s resume, but when coaches put on the GM hat they can look really stupid. Especially when it comes to QB. Zim’s mentor the Big Tuna was notoriously dumb when it came to QBs. He tried to replace both Simms and Hostetler before they won SBs for him.

Let’s hope Flip is not as ignorant a personnel guy as Parcells was.

        • Drediock

in the case of Hostetler they wanted to replace him even after he won a Superbowl for them

    • beloitgopher

Kevin has been with the Vikes for a good period of time and has not left. He just might stay with a pay raise to work with John and learn how he develops QB’s. Kevin already knows Pat’s offence and he also knows that Pat will call the plays, so why leave when he can keep learning.

If we have a great season and win the SB our OC will be a hot item and then Kevin can be the OC without having to move.

      Just speculation.

      • Cman

That’s very possible, but I think Stefanski is as good as gone now. He can learn from Shurmur just as well as he can from DeFilippo.

        • Steve Jensen

His time will come. He only has 1 year 6 mil left on his contract which is a bargain and, as this season proves, you need 2 QB’s.

          • cka2nd

And Stefanski would have a say in which QB the Giants select with the #2 pick in Round One, and be the man primarily responsible for his development.

  • linus

My only concern is that he has very little experience calling plays, but getting that experience is probably the main reason he wanted the job.

    • Cman

That was my concern as well, but from everything I’m reading, he is a very intelligent guy and has been getting huge praise with the turnaround with Wentz, and how he prepared Foles after Wentz was injured. I guess we will see.

      • Duane

That’s why I would like to draft a q.b. , have sloter , teddy , and franchise Case . Gives him options for a year and see where the future takes us.

    • Jordan Musser

Linus check out his background he has pretty much been a qb coach or OC every where he has coached. This is very nice to see.

      • linus

I’m not saying it’s a bad hire (how would I or any of us really know?), but I did check out his background, and the only time he has ever been an OC in the NFL was for one season in Cleveland, which presumably means that’s the only season he may have actually called plays.

        • Jordan Musser

Linus I did a quick glance at Clevelands stats over the past 4 seasons. The offense was typically finishing around the same spot statistically those 4 years but the biggest impact Defillipo had in 2015 was qb rating. That year Defillipo led the Cleveland qbs to a 84% qb rating. No other year was it above 77%. And his qbs that year were Josh McCown, Johnny Manziel and Austin Davis. The 93.3 rating was the second best qbr for McCown in his 15 year career only bested by his performance this season where he gathered a 94.5 qbr.

          • Gordon Guffey

            Good info Jordan ~

  • DonladTrump

Love the hire now go draft Lamar Jackson and implement the RPO into the offense.

  • Andre Esters

If a QB deal quickly comes into focus, safe to say that’s in big part to Defilippo having major sway… I am curious to see who they deem a worthy #1

  • David Prestin

This means either vikes go with Teddy or bradford. Young qb experience and also experience with Bradford. Just a hunch.

    • Gordon Guffey

Or if the Eagles have the clear cap room which they will just to get under dare I say Foles ~ And no David this isn’t wishful thinking on my part ~ LOL ~ Just a worry of my own ~

I dont see Teddy coming back but if he does I hope he plays light out ~ Who would the backup be if he did ~ Teddy or Sam ~ ??? It would be a on going fight between the team fans and the Teddy Only Zots and his forever loyal sports writers in Judd and Coller ~ Man I would have a blast ~ But I want ~ Smiley Face 🙂

  • Big TDs

I hope he doesn’t McDaniel us.

  • styx rogan

Chilly is the kick azz offense we need

  • Gordon Guffey

What does John DeFilippo value at the position?

He talked at length about that last week during Super Bowl media interviews and one trait stands out.
“I’ll preach this until the last day I coach, character, character, character in the quarterback room,” he said. “Those guys have to love football and get along, and because it’s a tight knit group, if you have an outcast in that room, it makes it really, really hard.”

  • Wilbur One

Interesting to see that DeFilippo worked under interim head coach Tony Sparano at Oakland, so they know each other. Will Sparano stay now that DeFilippo has leap-frogged over him? After coaching Wentz to All Pro status in only two years, is this the plan for Sloter? My guess is this story is far from over.
